My to do list (or should I say to eat list?) of Maastricht is neverending. New restaurants are popping up all the time and next to that Maastricht has such nice places you always want to return to. So difficult choices have to be made every time. 😉 I will try to narrow it down to some of my favourite places located in the lovely city I used to work in.
Let’s start with brunch! My favourite meal of the day at my favourite place: Van Wijck. You can avoid peak hours because they serve breakfast all day. I end up ordering Eggs Benedict here almost every time. It is just so good! Pair it with a nice glass of cava or an espresso tonic. If you are in a hurry, grab their delicious coffee to go. Dogs are welcome too!

Since I am a such a brunch addict I will add another brunch hotspot. If you ever find yourself in Maastricht on a sunday Harry’s is your go-to place. At this restaurant of Hotel Beaumont they serve amazing Eggs Benedict and brioche French toast. Or how about a gorgeous cheesecake? Of course brunch is not complete without a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary. If you are too hungover: enjoy a mad mango, a spicy carrot juice or a lift ticket.

When it’s later in the day head down to the narrow street called ‘Koestraat’. Here you will find amongst a lot of other lovely restaurants Le Fernand, Café manger. At Le Fernand they serve a wide range of very tasty French dishes with a twist. The food is served apéro style so you can enjoy as many of the delicious dishes you want in one night. If you still have trouble choosing, they also serve a plateau surprise. For the dessert this means you don’t have to choose either between macarons, cheesecake or moelleux au chocolat.

If you are in the mood for eastern mediterrean cuisine go to the extraordinary restaurant Bab Tomas. I am seriously impressed by the Levantine cuisine they serve here and the story behind the staff makes it extra special. While enjoying delicious mezze you learn a little bit about their journey from Syria to Maastricht. Be sure to try the delicious salads, Sheesh Tawouk (in yogurt marinated chicken) and Mutabal Shawander (mashed beetroot). Next time I will try to save room for Bouza (Arabic pistachio icecream).

At Ristopub Paletti two Dutchies and two Italians teamed up to combine the best of both worlds and prove these two go very well together. The owners go out of their way to make sure you have a lovely evening. You can go for just a drink (good Verdicchio), share some bites, a pizza made in their glorious woodoven or go all out and enjoy a four course meal. We tried the Paletti plateau and loved every single thing on it! A presto!

Press the doorbell at Onglet and a warm welcome to the restaurant in a former butchers workshop will follow. All of the dishes made my tastebuds do a little dance. The meat dishes like the secreto07 and the grilled onglet are really good, but the vegetarion dishes, like the roasted beetroot, are an absolute feast as well. You know you have found your new favourite place, when you are already planning your next visit even before you have finished your (dark chocolate) dessert.

After dinner it’s time for some proper after dinner drinks! At Maastrichts very own speakeasy Mr. Smith they serve the best cocktails in town. Press for drinks, descend and order a Flora Dora, a Dark and Stormy or ask for a cocktail customized to your personal taste. Every once in a while an unusual high tea is served in this underground bar. Booking in advance is highly recommended.

If you don’t feel like drinking cocktails underground you can also take the elevator up to the 8th floor of the Student Hotel. Have some delicious drinks and bites while enjoying the sunset at Bold Rooftopbar to end a perfect day in Maastricht!

Great blog and fantastic pictures which made me hungry 🙂
