Foodbaby in Costa Rica (2/2)

In part two of my Costa Rica blog you will find my recommendations for good coffee and good food in Puerto Viejo, La Fortuna, Tamarindo and San José.

Puerto Viejo  |  Breakfast

You will not be feeling hungry for quite a while after visiting Café Rico in Puerto Viejo. The waitress called our order one healthy and one naughty meal. And she was right! Naughty ‘Ana Osa especial’ equals fries loaded with cheese, bacon and avocado. The healthy ‘breakbooster’ is a massive granolabowl. Both really good. During our second visit I tried the French toast made of bananabread and needed a doggy bag once again. They also provide books, bikes and laundry service. Dogs are welcome too.

La Fortuna  | Dinner

In La Fortuna Don Rufino wowed us! We tasted the pulled chicken arancini, the (massive) braised pork and the cacao caramel desert. Absolutely delicious! They serve good espresso and wine as well. Unfortuntaly it was our last night in La Fortuna, otherwise we would have definately visited more than once.

Tamarindo  |  Lunch

At Pico Bistro in Tamarindo they serve very tasty breakfast and lunch. Next to their famous Pico Iced Coffee we tried their yummy panini el Argentino and panini el Español. They also serve healthy bowls. Not only the food is great, the view is stunning, since you are right on the beach.

San José  |  Vietnamese food

In San José we were craving Vietnamese food, so we ended up at Café Rojo. Here you can choose between bun, báhn mí, casado or ensalada and meat and/or vegetable toppings. We tried the fingerlicking caramel chicken báhn mí (sandwich) and pork and shiitake bun (bowl). Unfortunately they were out of their famous ginger iced coffee, but the regular iced coffee was no disappointment either.

San José  |  Coffee

For specialty coffee, Cafeoteca is your go-to place in San José. Besides coffee, served every possible way you can think of, they also serve very good food. For example this avocado sandwich on homemade bread. They also serve a wide range of yummy looking pastries. For dinner you can you go to the adjecent Kalú and in between you find a cute boutique with items from local designers.

Puerto Viejo  |  Coconuts and churros

Last but not least: what’s the best place to enjoy pipa fria (young chilled coconut) or churros? The beach of course! I enjoyed these snacks while watching surfers catching waves at Playa Cocles in Puerto Viejo.
